Explorers are an active group of young people aged 14 to 18.
Together, they make up the fifth section of the Scouts.
They meet most weeks in groups called Units to try new things, make new friends and conquer the small task of learning new skills and making their mark on the world.
There are several Units in South Leeds and Morley, and you can find more about them below. There is also a Young Leader Unit for Explorers, where they volunteer in another section. We strongly encourage those who want to be Young Leaders to also join one of the main units to develop their own personal skills which will be invaluable for being a future leader and for their own personal skills for life.
Being an Explorer is all about discovering what you can do on your own terms, making the most of what skills you have, and developing new ones
Alongside your friends, you’ll master the skills that will make you feel stronger and happier, and choose new things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.
Explorers are part of the global Scout family. Closer to home, they’re not part of a single Scout Group, but instead are part of the wider Scout District, alongside Scout Network members (aged 18 to 25).
Yes! Explorers is open to everyone. If you have any questions about accessibility, please have a chat with your local leader. By working together, we can ensure that everyone can join in the fun.
Then don’t worry! We recognise that you will have other things on, and Explorers is designed to be flexible. This is especially important at exam times, and we will accommodate this. We’ve even been known to have study breaks on camp!
As a part of the Scouts, Explorers do wear a uniform and a necker where appropriate. However, for the first few meetings, just come along and decide if it is right for you
"Subs" (your termly contribution to running costs) vary a little from group to group, but its's between £40-50 per school term.
Camps, outings, adventurous activities are all optional and are paid for individually. We run everything as cost effectively as possible as we're a charity.
What do our Explorers say?
It’s like a youth group but with more opportunities for experiences. With a youth group you’re restricted to the space you’re in.
You get to do really cool stuff, like caving, watersports, air rifle shooting, airsoft, paintballing, go karting, and travel abroad.
It is an welcoming and safe opportunity to talk, have fun, travel both near and far, and escape from our busy life of school or college.
There’s no pressure to do stuff, but we’re always encouraged to try something new or get a new skill.
If you'd like your child to join Scouts, or if you're interested in volunteering, please get in touch with your local group.
